My biggest complaint was the Mac and cheese! The macaroni was so horribly over cooked (that you could barely tell it was elbow noodles because they had fallen apart), and whatever cheese they used was just lumpy pieces rather than smooth and melted! The pork chop was good. I ordered fried pork chop (not breaded, but rather just put in oil!) also over yellow rice, which was cold, with candied yams (which I was told were "not ready yet!), so I ordered corn (which was definitely from a can!), and Mac & cheese. staff was very friendly and everyone who walked in the place greeted all the diners cheerfully! My husband had "stew meat" (not stew, just meat!) over yellow rice with two sides collard greens and Lima beans, and he enjoyed them both. It's on a very busy street so we chose to eat indoors. It is a small, cute restaurant, that was clean with a small dining room with an open kitchen and some outdoor seating. This was our first visit to this "soul food" restaurant. Here is my 2 cents on the food and chatter. The menu has a variety of enticing options, and made for a difficult decision (and no doubt. The thighs, meanwhile, felt tight, and in what might be a first for me just as a result of how my body is shaped, the butt was actually quite tight. In my expected size, the waist felt a bit tight, but not uncomfortable, just like it was squeezing a bit. Unfortunately, I didn’t take a photo of the size down in these shorts before exchanging them, and I think an extra photo might have illustrated how these shorts actually fit. I sized up in the Speed Up shorts from the size I wear in Oiselle. That’s life! I exchanged them for the size I wear in the Groove Pant, which is a size down from what I wore in the Find Your Pace shorts (I made two very, very lucky guesses when I ordered both of those). I read around trying to figure out whether Oiselle and Lululemon numerical sizes were comparable, whether the speed up shorts ran larger or smaller than the Find Your Pace shorts, and whether the speed up shorts ran small, and I still had to do an exchange. This combination has been speculated to be the reason for the recent increases in track running performance. For the purpose of this perspective, we adopt the popular terminology “super spikes” to refer to modern spikes that combine lightweight, compliant, resilient foams (and air pods) with a stiff (nylon/PEBA/carbon-fiber), often curved, plate (see Fig. Adding this new, more substantial layer of foam allows for an embedded stiff plate, and in some cases, an increased rocker geometry. In recent years, ultra-lightweight, compliant, and resilient foams have emerged, providing cushion without sacrificing weight or dissipating a lot of energy. 1), which employed 68 micro spikes, as opposed to the conventional four or six pins, were banned. Interestingly, this is not the first time that spike technology has been a topic of debate. They used a relatively simple design: a lightweight, snug upper and a plastic spike plate with little to no midsole sandwiched in between. In the past, spikes (i.e., track shoes with spikes on the bottom) served the primary purpose of providing grip while being as light as possible. This new generation of track spikes have become known as “super spikes.” However, perhaps the most glaring change on the track is the evolution of spikes that athletes are wearing on their feet. Notably, there are several potential explanations for these improved race times, such as pace-light technology, new track surface technology, and long durations of uninterrupted training during the COVID-19 pandemic. Similarly, outstanding performances have been set in middle-distance events by US high school and college athletes. Quantifying the exact benefits from super spikes is difficult and we may need to rely on comparison of track performances pre- and post- the introduction of super spikes.īetween the summers of 20, new world records have been set in various middle-distance and long-distance events, including the 1500 m indoor track event, and 5000 and 10,000 m outdoor track events for both men and women. Unlike marathon shoes, testing track spikes comes with a unique challenge of quantifying the metabolic energy demands of middle-distance running events, which are partly anaerobic. Further confounding our understanding of super spikes is the difficulty of testing them. 10,000 m) and the characteristics of the athlete wearing them. Importantly, the effects of super spikes will vary based on several factors including the event (e.g., 100 m vs. Based on current literature, we speculate about what advantages these features provide. To date, the specific contributions of new innovations in footwear, including lightweight, resilient, and compliant midsole foam, altered geometry, and increased longitudinal bending stiffness, to track running performance are unknown. This has led many to question what role “super spikes” play in improving running performance. The recent and rapid developments in track spike innovation have been followed by a wave of record-breaking times and top performances. Cuffed Jeans: What type of jeans to roll: Up until the 1960s cuffing your jeans was the norm, as they only came in a few lengths – so this is a retro look. Make each roll slightly lopsided for a nonchalant look. Never roll more than twice or you'll look like you have bagels on your legs.Īim for a 1.5″ cuff – The key is making the first roll less than an inch. Rolling is what most guys mean when they say ‘cuffing your jeans‘.Ī rolled hem is one that's turned up twice. Older men – Hemmed jeans are a conservative style, so you won't look like you're trying too hard to be funky. Guys who want to look thinner – Hemmed jeans don't add bulk to your legs. Guys who want to look taller – There's nothing to break up the leg line, and if you cut them higher than the tops of your shoes you look slightly ‘too' tall for your jeans… in a good way. Smarter outfits like men's casual blazers you can wear with jeans and dress shoes go well with hemmed jeans, as it's a cleaner look. High-top footwear from sneakers to dress boots. Jeans with a wider leg opening – Rolls, cuffs and stacks need some friction with your leg to stop them falling down. Smarter jeans – Although if they're your first pair of nice jeans and/or you expect to get a lot of use out of them, you might want to avoid hemming to keep your options open. Unsanforized (non-shrink-proofed) raw denim can shrink by 5-10% , so you could end up showing 3 inches more leg than you meant to… suddenly not so stylish. If so, you're in luck because today, we're showing you how to roll up jeans in 5 different ways: They either show too much leg, pick a roll that makes them look short or fat, or choose a roll that looks weird with their boots. You tell him *this* is what it's all about. Some usage guides have come to accept the newfangled sense, while others still feel that it is incorrect. None of these seem to have had much effect, as the sentence adverb use of hopefully has continued to grow. The use of hopefully as a sentence adverb increased in the middle of the 20th century, prompting a number of guardians of the language to issue rules, warnings, and admonitions that it was a thing to be avoided. It should be noted that the use of hopefully as a sentence adverb was not widespread until fairly recently (although there are occasional instances of it through the 18th and 19th centuries). Samuel Hartlib, A Further Discoverie of the Office of Publick Address for Accomodations, 1648 This Discourse hath fully approved itself unto the Judgement of all those that have seen it hitherto, and hopefully it would have wrought some effect upon those that mannage the Affairs of this State, if the Danger of this last Commotion, had not employed all their strength and Attention, to save us from sudden Shipwreck. But the use of hopefully in this fashion is not modern, unless you adopt a definition of modern that means “occurring at any point after Shakespeare.” The earliest “modern usage” of hopefully that we are aware of comes from the middle of the 17th century. One possibility is that this use is seen as modern, and there is a curious and seemingly implacable feeling that many people have that linguistic change is evidence of some moral and intellectual decline. We have a large number of adverbs that perform this function ( thankfully, ideally, luckily, etc.), but few, if any of them have aroused the degree of ire that hopefully has. In the citation above the adverb surely is not intended to indicate that a person thinks of something “in a sure manner” it qualifies the entire statement, and has the meaning of “assuredly” (another word that is often used as a sentence adverb). ”Crabtree’s Complaint,” The Spirit of the Public Journals, 1803 “At church!” cried she “surely you don’t think us so barbarously unfashionable as to go to church!” A sentence adverb modifies the meaning of an entire statement (as opposed to the adverb of manner, which modifies a single word or phrase). Hopefully can be used as a sentence adverb (also referred to occasionally as an adverbial disjunct). However, this is not the only manner in which hopefully functions, no matter how much people might wish it were otherwise. The issue that some people have with the preceding sentence is that hopefully should rightfully be confined to meaning “in a hopeful manner,” and to write that “in a hopeful manner people will stop debasing the English language” just doesn’t make much sense. As in “Hopefully, people will stop debasing the English language, and we can all go back to writing as Chaucer did.” It was the sense of hopefully that we define as “it is hoped: I hope: we hope.” Hopefully, that's good enough for you.īut what could this “modern usage” of hopefully be? Was it perhaps, as is the case with literally, one in which the word took on a meaning that was close to opposite of its commonly accepted one? Did it have something to do with millennials? Was it one in which the word lost all meaning? Not quite. 'Hopefully' has been used as a sentence adverb since at least 1648. From the pulsating beats of "Stayin' Alive" to the yearning strains of "How Deep Is Your Love", each track serves a narrative purpose, further elevating the story and characters. To this day, the "Saturday Night Fever" soundtrack remains a testament to the power of music in cinema. It showcased how music could not only complement but propel a film's narrative, emotionally engaging the audience and immersing them in the cinematic world. Not only did it single-handedly push disco into the mainstream, but it also altered the dynamics of film and music collaborations. The legacy of the soundtrack transcends its initial success. It held the number one spot on the Billboard 200 in the US for 24 consecutive weeks and topped the UK Albums Chart, eventually becoming one of the best-selling albums of all time. Upon its release, the "Saturday Night Fever" soundtrack became an unprecedented commercial success. This full embrace of the genre yielded a cohesive, immersive soundtrack that didn't merely accompany the narrative but became integral to it. In contrast to soundtracks of the same era, like "Grease" or "The Rocky Horror Picture Show", which leaned towards rock 'n roll and eclectic pop, "Saturday Night Fever" plunged headfirst into disco. "Disco Inferno" by The Trammps, one of the longest tracks on the album, further fuels the film's pulsating dance sequences, reaching number 11 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 16 in the UK.ĭavid Shire's instrumental tracks, "Manhattan Skyline" and "Night on Disco Mountain", offer an evocative ambiance, capturing the dichotomy of Tony's life between day and daydream. This track, despite not being released as a single, became a beloved tune associated with the disco era. "Boogie Shoes" by KC and the Sunshine Band injects additional energy into the film, scoring several dance scenes. The former, a heartfelt ballad, underscores the emotional turmoil of the characters, while the latter, a disco-infused adaptation of Beethoven's Symphony No. Yvonne Elliman's "If I Can't Have You" and Walter Murphy's "A Fifth of Beethoven" further enrich the album's texture. The song enjoyed success, reaching the top 40 in both the US and UK. Although the Bee Gees also recorded a version, it was Tavares' rendition that featured during Tony's dance with Stephanie (Karen Lynn Gorney), symbolizing their growing bond. A global sensation, it topped the charts in the US, UK, and numerous other countries.Ī mellow departure from the Bee Gees' tracks, "More Than A Woman" by Tavares introduces a softer romantic dimension. It can be heard during various dance sequences, setting the tone for the vibrant nightlife scenes. "Bee Gees" don the vocalist cap again for "Night Fever", the third track. It soared to number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 3 on the UK Singles Chart. This ballad first swells during Tony's contemplative moments, reflecting the deep yearning of his character. Immediately following is "How Deep Is Your Love", another iconic Bee Gees number. As a tune, "Stayin' Alive" epitomizes the resilient spirit of the disco era, claiming the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100 in the US and reaching number 4 in the UK charts. As the opening credits roll, Tony Manero, played by John Travolta, strides down the Brooklyn streets, his gait in perfect sync with the song's rhythm. Kickstarting the compilation is the indomitable "Stayin' Alive" by the Bee Gees. A pulsating cornucopia of disco, pop and soul, it wove aural magic, binding viewers to an immortal cinematic experience. In the realm of film and music collaborations, few have managed to achieve the transcendent resonance of the soundtrack to the 1977 film "Saturday Night Fever". |
